New podcast episode: Ben Greene, author of My Child is Trans, Now What?
The Gay Podcast for Everyone (Episode 35)
In episode 35, I chat with author, speaker, and LGBTQ+ inclusion advocate, Ben Greene.
Ben discusses his book, My Child is Trans, Now What? A Joy-Centered Approach to Support, a guide for parents, allies, and loved ones going through the coming out process when their loved one comes out as transgender.
Ben shares from his own experience coming out as trans and offers insight as to how parents of trans kids can be better allies, build supportive communities, and find a joy-centered approach to navigating the journey as a family.
If you have a trans loved one in your life, this book will help support you, and if you’re an ally, this book will help you become a better one. I am a proud lesbian, and this book helped me gain insight as to how I can be a better ally for my own community.
If there’s a book equivalent to this podcast, it’s this book, and I’m so excited to share the conversation with you!
WHAT I LEARNED FROM THE EPISODE:
Honestly, there are too many moments to choose from, but a few key things stood out:
It’s important for us to share good coming out stories.
Ben shared how we hear a lot of negative stories in the media or social media, and it’s important to show that there is hope on the other end of fear.
That’s exactly why I started this podcast. No one expects you to be on the float of a Pride parade. All you have to do is show love and not turn your back on your loved one. Yes, it’s a bumpy road, but everything will fall into place over time. (And if you want to be on the float of a Pride parade later, go for it!)
Are you sharing positive words around your loved one that demonstrate your support for the LGBTQ+ community?
Sometimes, we forget that our silence speaks volumes, and many times, it tells the wrong story. Let your loved ones know that LGBTQ+ or not, they’re always in a safe space to be themselves.
FUN FACT:
This is the first time that I am sharing the video version of the podcast, and it is only available to my Substack community right now. Thank you for your support here on the Subtack platform. There’s definitely more to come!
I hope you enjoy the episode! Please leave a comment and let me know your thoughts.
